Critique 2Faced Dance Company: In The Dust . 24th October 2011. Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury, Kent. The all male cast of eight dancers presented their audience with an intense performance of In The Dust . Whilst having elements of softness and sensitivity threaded throughout the show, juxtaposed against this was the fierceness and domineering spirit of the cast. In Subterrania , Tom Dale’s choreography seemed to question notions of humanity. This was apparent through the use of movement, props and music that evoked symbolic gestures attached to this theme. Dale’s piece immediately portrayed an urban, contemporary vibe, because of the free flowing movements and break-dance style of the dancers, the unstructured music, the monotone clothes and the minimalist lighting. The dancers’ versatility was displayed through the contrast of their different movement styles and intentions. They morphed from being free and individual personalities, to being a slick ensemble that emulated every disciplined movement and rhythm of a machine. From these multiple components in a machine would unleash a herd of animals, with the men’s unified rippling movements projecting the intimidating, tribal nature of gang culture.
